ERROR ANALYSIS OF PASSIVE VOICE BY THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP DWIJENDRA GIANYAR

IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014

 

1.1  Background of the Study

As an International language, English is very important in the world. It is usually used as a tool of communication among people who come from different countries. Everyone in the world should have a good communication to share their idea or problem. By communication, they can have an interaction among them because human cannot live without interaction.

English learning should begun from now, that is because many books in advance level are written in English. So when the students study at higher level (senior high school or university level), they may understand the material or books which are written in English even though they are not English department students. That is why some junior high schools have supported the idea of applying English learning for their students by using good grammar, methods and techniques.

We had learn English especially grammar since in elementary school until Senior High School. However, there are still a lot of students that can not apply it correctly. It is the reason that the technique always make the students boring. In this case, the motivation is needed. Davis (2006:25) stated that learning motivation refers to an internal state resulting from a need which incities behaviour, usually directed towered fulfilling the need. Continue reading

Conditional sentences

Conditional sentences are sentences expressing factual implications, or hypothetical situations and their consequences. They are so called because the validity of the main clause of the sentence is conditional on the existence of certain circumstances, which may be expressed in a dependent clause or may be understood from the context.

The conditional sentences are sometimes confusing for learners of English.

Watch out:

1) Which type of the conditional sentences is used?

2) Where is the if-clause (e.g. at the beginning or at the end of the conditional sentence)?

The Smartest Parrot

Once upon time, a man had a wonderful parrot. There was no other parrot like it. The parrot could say every word, except one word. The parrot would not say the name of the place where it was born. The name of the place was Catano.

The man felt excited having the smartest parrot but he could not understand why the parrot would not say Catano. The man tried to teach the bird to say Catano however the bird kept not saying the word.

At the first, the man was very nice to the bird but then he got very angry. “You stupid bird!” pointed the man to the parrot. “Why can’t you say the word? Say Catano! Or I will kill you” the man said angrily. Although he tried hard to teach, the parrot would not say it. Then the man got so angry and shouted to the bird over and over; “Say Catano or I’ll kill you”. Passive Voice

The passive voice is less usual than the active voice. The active voice is the “normal” voice. But sometimes we need the passive voice. In this lesson we look at how to construct the passive voice, when to use it and how to conjugate it.

Construction of the Passive Voice

The structure of the passive voice is very simple:

subject + auxiliary verb (be) + main verb (past participle)

The main verb is always in its past participle form.

Finding the Main Idea

How Can I Locate the Main Idea?

Once you can find the topic, you are ready to find the main idea. The main idea is the point of the paragraph. It is the most important thought about the topic.

To figure out the main idea, ask yourself this question: What is being said about the person, thing, or idea (the topic)?

The author can locate the main idea in different places within a paragraph. The main idea is usually a sentence, and it is usually the first sentence. The writer then uses the rest of the paragraph to support the main idea.
